Ms. Januka Thapa is a Chairperson of Samaj Pariwartan Samabeshi Krisak Samuha (inclusive self-help group) at Tadi rural municipality in Nuwakot. She has been associated with this group for almost two years.
Januka was elected as a Chairperson because women in her group trusted her with this role. She feels motivated to support vulnerable people through the self-help group formed by Purnima that supports them with income generation activities and skill-based training about high value cash crops, nursery management, tunnel farming and other improved farming technologies that yields high production with low input. Linkage of productions with the market is supporting women to become financially independent and is contributing to their households’ expenses. The self-help group unites vulnerable people in her community to uplift their economic status and Januka as a single woman herself is heavily engaged in it
“Engagement in the self-help group has developed my confidence to lead the group. Training on leadership development and saving and credit has further enhanced my skills to lead and manage the group. Besides, I have developed courage to express our issues and problems in front of the ward office.
Our group advocates for rights of single women and young girls with disability and encourages to access services available through Government of Nepal. And, it also prioritizes women to access revolving fund as loan with cheap interest rate to support with income generation activities. Group members have received an opportunity to learn about new technology for income generation and are working towards improving their livelihood status.”
